English Dub Review: Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon “The Girl Named Rion”

Overview:

Trapped within Mount Musubi, Rion’s soul longs for peace. Rion asks Setsuna to sever the thread of fate that connects her to her father, Kirinmaru.

Our Take(Possible Spoilers):

I’ve only known Rion for an episode and a half but if anything happened to her I would kill everyone in this room. Seriously, though what a sweet cinnamon roll she is. Why is it the ones with the super shitty parents are often the sweetest? She helps Towa, and everyone and wants to help destroy her father. She’s been basically just existing for 600 years and still has such a bright outlook. I hope I can be like her.

Rion gives Towa the Kyokan root which turns into the Star-Slicer Flute which is used to summon the Zanseiken. A new powerful sword that Towa wields. Rion even manages to escape her bondage and possess her vessel to travel with everyone. In case you were wondering, yes I am now very excited for future episodes because more Rion is definitely not a bad thing. But seriously if anything bad happens to her…

Something bad will have to happen eventually, if Kirinmaru is to be defeated then after that I am sure she will disappear or something. But we don’t have to think about that for now, that’s hopefully a long way off. Speaking of Kirinmaru, shout out to Crispin Freeman for portraying him so well. He does villains really well so he was a natural choice for Kirinmaru.

Yashahime is a hard show to judge because in a lot of ways it seems to be swept up in the past. I’ve mentioned I have never seen Inuyasha so I don’t know what plotlines are being recycled but based on the number of flashbacks and things it seems like a fair few. Not only that but it follows plot beats very similar to early 00’s anime. Towa pulled off a move that felt like it was pulled directly from an anime from that time. Not a bad thing per se but can be a bit cringey.

Ultimately how I review something is did I have fun watching it? So far that has been a yes to every episode. It reminds me of Toonami after school and I love that. Not everything has to be profound or a masterpiece. Sometimes we need to just have a little fun and so far that is what Yashahime is.
