English Dub Review: Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun “Party Eve”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Kirio’s ideal dream is to create a world where all demons would be equal, regardless of power status. Iruma being the dopey optimist completely agrees with this philosophy, so he suggests that they shoot for the grand prize at the Battler Party Tournament. If they’re able to get the grand prize, everyone, including high-ranking demons, would see how hard Kirio and the Magical Apparatus Battler worked. However, as all the Battlers are getting their presentations ready for said Party Eve, Things take an unexpected direction that begins to give a sense of urgency to the proceedings…

Our Take

This almost feels like they’re ripping off the tournament arcs of other popular anime such as Dragonball and Yuyu Hakusho, and recently One-Punch Man’s 2nd Season as each of the Demons partaking in this party thingy called “Battlers” while bland in terms of names, at least compensate with creativity as each Battler and really makes me wonder who will win the grand prize.

However many of the games themselves are shown through this virtual sorcery hat which sort of works the same way as that exaggerated video game system from Rick and Morty that plays with people’s perceptions of reality. Hopefully, this won’t be as predictable as Girffindor always winning Hogwarts school semesters in the Harry Potter stories, because I’ll be okay even if Iruma’s group isn’t getting the prize because the others’ motivations, ideas, games, make it somewhat compelling to a certain degree.

What keeps me from giving this a higher rating is how almost nothing has happened and sucks in terms of pacing, but once that ending hit with that very specific twist at the end, It’s a nice calm before what I imagine to be a big storm with the outcome of the otherworldly kids in the school. It’ll be interesting to see how Sullivan also gets involved…
