English Dub Review: Welcome to Demon School Iruma Kun! “Dem-dol Kuromu-chan”

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

Iruma’s rank & popularity unintentionally increase which consequently earns the ire of a popular individual named Kuromu who’s a Dem-dol (basically the Demonic equivalent to a pop-Idol). Asmodeus explains Dem-dols are vital as teenage demons go through an “evil cycle” of destructive behavior, so they are distracted by popular entertainment which converts their impulses into healthy excitement. We do get a series of bizarre plot-twists involving a certain character whose situation makes me feel like I’m watching a badly-written Hannah Montana episode, but things take a more interesting direction when Iruma just so happens to win tickets to meet that very particular Dem-dol in person…

Our Take

While the twist itself felt like a Hannah Montana episode with the whole “double identity” schtick involving a specific student within Iruma’s class. The Demonworld at least takes this superficial profession a bit seriously and has an actual purpose as demon society has a strange catharsis built into its media to prevent violent acts of barbarism which is hilariously genius.

The student in question who’s a “Dem-dol” in disguise is quite a stark contrast to such an unassuming dolt like Iruma who never asked for any of the attention at all and is only keeping a low profile out of survival. When Kuromu confronts Iruma for the lack of attention she’s getting, it’s weirdly pathetic that Iruma’s been getting this attention out of inadvertent happenstance which comes across as comical but quite soul-crushing. And with the way things are playing out, it looks like she’s harboring an insane amount of stress in the process and looks like things will go south next episode. Who knows what could happen next!
