English Dub Review: Urusei Yatsura “The Mizunokoji Boy/ Love Letter Trouble”

Overview:

All’s fair in love and… baseball? It’s time for a showdown on the baseball diamond! And once the dust settles, a “love letter” stirs up trouble.

Our Take:

Do you know what I’ve learned about Urusei Yatsura? The episodes that don’t focus on Ataru are usually pretty good. It was nice to see an episode that was comedy. Sure Ataru was in it and he was his typical annoying self but this way at least the annoyance was kept to a minimum. In fact, there were parts of the episode where I actually liked Ataru because he wasn’t hitting on every woman that existed. It was rare but still.

Tobimaro Mizunokoji is who I wish the main character was, though he is very similar to a lot of rom-com protagonists. Oblivious and not into girls, at least not into them right now. I suppose he could be in the LGBTQ camp. Actually… that would be kind of cool. This series is from the 80s’ so I doubt it but that would be refreshing. Perhaps the reason is constantly trying to beat Mendo is that he has a crush on him?! I guess we’ll see but it is interesting how many characters get introduced in this to be relegated to guest appearances at best.
