English Dub Review: Tsugumomo “Partner”

We left off last week in the middle of the season’s final duel, in which the stakes may or may not be high. Kiriha may possibly die, but the onlookers don’t seem that concerned.

Spoilers Below

Kazuya and Sunao are evenly matched – both of their crystal representations are equally cracked. They both realize that whoever makes the next move will be at risk and find themselves in a stalemate, staring at each other. Kazuya has too much of a conscience to wait this out and win, so he goes for it. Their local goddess spins out a string of new vocab (I was worried we wouldn’t get any in this episode). Apparently, tsugumogami can possess its wielder, but it comes at the price of any bodily autonomy. But if the two work together as perfect partners, it can work out. Kazuya and Kiriha enter Divine Possession. Together, they break the enemy sword tsugomogami in half and win.

Sunao is shocked. Luckily her sweet sword tsugomogami is still alive. Maybe now she’ll be a little kinder to him. In the aftermath of the fight, Kazuya passes out.

With Kazuya at home in his bed, Kazuya explains Divine Possession can drain a human’s energy. Kukuri and Kiriha spend a good amount of time taking care of him, baths and all. So many baths in this show.

The whole family is gathered around the table as Kazuya heads off to school. Kiriha is suspiciously staying home.

Sunao’s mother is very upset with her daughter for losing the duel. She says that to redeem herself, Sunao must take Kazuya as a husband. Just like everyone else wants to.

The school is normal for Kazuya until the teacher announces as a new transfer student. Kiriha has enrolled in school. Our voice-over vocal lady explains that often times tsugumogamis even become partners to human beings.

It’s clear that there will be more Tsugumomo to come, and I’m certainly happy about that. This show has a little of everything and it’s adept at using it. For both the drama and the comedy, I want to see more, and there are plenty of more stories left to tell.
