English Dub Review: Tonikawa: Over The Moon For You “The First Night”

Overview

Tsukasa shows up to uphold her vow to Nasa with a marriage certificate and the two proceed to submit their marriage registration. As the newlywed couple approaches their first night together, they realize Nasa’s apartment doesn’t have enough necessities to accommodate two people, leading to Tsukasa suggesting she spend the night at a hotel. But Nasa stops her and proposes they go shopping instead…

Our Take

This episode primarily focused on the beginning of the newlywed’s time together past the confession as Tsukasa stays over at Nasa’s and they immediately bond with one another. Given that this relationship is progressing at a brisk pace compared to other romance anime stories that often infamously drag for anything to happen, I’m starting to see why so many people praised the manga for being wholesome as I’m rarely into romance stories in general (“A Walk to Remember” to me, being one of the good ones).

On a consistent level, their first night together was probably very different from an average married couple’s first night together, but it made sense considering the fact that they only started dating after they got married. It’s also clear that Nasa being alone for a long time with a minimal social life doesn’t know what to do with a girl now living with him, which explains why he gets so flustered. They may be married, but they’re basically strangers at this point.

Overall, this was a passable episode that raised more questions than answers. Nasa and by-extension the audience knows nothing about Tsukasa as a person. We don’t know anything about her past, her upbringing, her parents, lifestyle, etc. Don’t get me wrong, their romantic chemistry remains solid, but not knowing Tsukasa’s side of the story leading up to meeting Nasa only makes me doubt her intentions. I can’t help but think there has to be some ulterior motive as to why Tsukasa even put Nasa up to this.

I simply hope we equally learn more about Tsukasa in later episodes…
