English Dub Review: To Your Eternity “New Family”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Fushi struggles against the creature and tells Gugu to run. Gugu runs back with a plan to Booze Man for more alcohol and sees Rean’s parents. However, he’s drunk because of the alcohol but he prioritizes the goal of helping Fushi. He even confesses his love to Rean before running off to help Fushi. He burns the creature and follows the trail leading to Fushi. Gugu finds Fushi reverts back to his first form as a stone until Fushi’s creator restores him.

Afterward, Fushi meets with his creator who tells him that he shouldn’t stay in one place, but Fushi disagrees. He decides to stay here with Gugu since he knows that he can rely on Gugu. Four years later Rean visits the shop as Gugu goes and grabs Fushi who notices that he’s growing a beard. They all grab dinner in Booze Man’s place.

Our Take:

The episode was a good one with the fight against the creature stealing from Fushi. The family moments with Gugu grieving over Fushi’s “death” and Rean’s issue with her parents offer an interesting contrast to both of their lives.

For starters, Gugu actively helping out Fushi despite the immortal telling him to run was good. His spear throw had a clear impact on the wooden creature a.k.a Nokker by Fushi’s creator and the animation was nice. Gugu gradually figured out that he could use the alcohol in his system and the torch to burn the Nokker. The pacing for that part was good in that regard. Also, Gugu asking for alcohol even though he’s drunk emphasizes his priorities still remaining with the people he’s grown close to. In addition, his drunken confession about Rean was cute. Then there’s his transformation through the time skip which transitioned well, and Gugu working out and improving himself. He’s a physically strong guy now and with the ability to be a flamethrower Gugu can help Fushi if the Nokkers come back for Fushi.

Then there’s Fushi’s creator and Fushi after the fight and how it leads us to continue with the family life he has with Gugu and the others. It’s interesting to see Fushi’s creator respect his choice in staying when it could harm his chances of defeating the Nokkers. Then again the god values free will, unlike the gods that have created the Nokkers who literally steal from Fushi.

Overall the episode played out well to establish Gugu and Fushi as a family living with Booze Man and Pioran. Even though there’s still the danger of the Nokkers, Fushi’s bond with Gugu could get them through the danger.
