Our Take

For the final episode for season one, this wasn’t too bad to close off the first season and act as a pausing point. At least until the second season continues next year which was recently announced. But I can’t help but come away feeling a bit disappointed in this anime. I still think it was good for what it tried to accomplish.

But given its strong start, and good studio backing I expected something that attempted to be deep or philosophical. But it just became too repetitive (even if on paper the characters and their storylines felt significant) and was plagued with some poor writing in certain episodes where it felt like the budget shot itself in the foot.

Overall, the ending of season one was a mixed bag. While the most recent character death had an emotional impact for once, most of the other deaths before these overshadowed the proceedings and made everything feel a bit excessive. It also didn’t help that the the cast felt pretty average in my opinion. I never felt truly attached to many of the characters when the writing expected me to. Not to mention, part of me couldn’t really bring myself to like Tonari as much as I wanted to. But I will say that they ended the show on such a high note with this episode, that we can only hope season 2 redeems itself in some way…
