English Dub Review: To Your Eternity “Deep Memories”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

After terrorizing the city folk Fushi and Gugu stop after Gugu’s body gets weak and Fushi creates food. They discuss his ability to create and transform into someone who’s already passed away. Then Gugu tells Fushi about his past with his brother. Rean finds them tired of babysitting the adults. Fushi goes out to find Gugu’s mask and Rean shows Gugu her scar and tells her story. The two argue perspectives and Rean offers an olive branch in the form of a new mask.

Meanwhile, Fushi finds Gugu’s mask and encounters his creator who tells him to be cautious of the enemy. Rean and Gugu walk in town but her father’s hired hand finds her and tries to take her back home, but Gugu intervenes and they run. Fushi finds them, but so does Rean’s maidservant. While distracting Rean’s maidservant the enemy attacks Fushi and Gugu rushes to his aid at the sound of a scream.

Our Take:

This episode was good because it built up Fushi’s growing abilities to create while extending his bonding time with Gugu. Gugu and Rean get to talk about their issues while Fushi meets his creator again driving the supernatural conflict forward. The animation was decent and the voice acting was good.

Fushi’s stimulation is explored more with the creation of food, and Gugu’s explanation on death to Fushi is conveyed well and it even brings up an interesting idea on being stimulated by emotional pain. Fushi retaining impactful memories and using them to create or transform is an interesting concept. Gugu and Fushi reconciling was good as a turn to later reveal Gugu’s past and why he thinks of Fushi as a family member now. Then there’s Fushi and his creator who warns him about the enemy. It was unexpected that the creator spoke to Gugu, but it’s more to point out Fushi’s lack of development to combat against the enemy.

Gugu and Rean’s conversation was a clash in their lifestyles and screams teenager rebellion from the both of them. It’s pretty ironic with her perspective on their accident which makes Gugu think she’ll hate him if he tells her his role in that incident. However, they connect despite their clash and come to an understanding. There’s also Gugu’s acceptance over the alcohol organ in his body, even though he won’t forgive Booze Man for it.

Overall the episode was good and I’m excited to see if Gugu’s assistance will help Fushi develop more.
