English Dub Review: The Slime Diaries: “A Day in a Swimsuit”

Overview: Rimuru (Brittney Karbowski) along with Shion (Michelle Rojas), Shuna (Tia Ballard), Ranga (Tyson Rinehart), Soka (Caitlin Glass), Hakurou (Charlie Campbell) and Gobta (Ryan Reynolds), decide to spend a day at the beach to soak up the sun and water.

Our Take: When a day is spent in swimsuits, there’s more talk about the actual article of clothing than I ever could have imagined. But, surprisingly, it manages to keep it clever. Especially an engaging one that one does not often consider in the intelligence of a monster dictating the amount of clothing one wears. Of course, it would not be a swimsuit beach centric romp without our main heroines in skimpy bikinis, the titillating pleasure known as fanservice. Gobta being ridiculously horny and getting the real brunt end of it from the girls is absolute perfection.

Hakurou’s carnal enjoyment of a fish hunt serves as a fun reminder that he ain’t that old and senile. Other fun antics litter the episode like the girls trying to dress up Rimuru in a bikini or nobody wanting Shion to have anything to do with the gang’s fish dinner. Besides smart monster discussion, another shocking aspect is the extra time spent developing Souei, especially in him having a smaller role in the second season and this sister series up to this point. It is cute to see his softer side and how much he cares about and relies on Soka. Another smart way this series plots its placement in the timeline is Rimuru’s fireside drink with Treyni, Ranga and Hakurou. They celebrate the time they have as they brace themselves for enemies chomping at the bit for Tempest’s resources, alluding to the conflict that would eventually unfold with the church. It ends with a nice sunrise as the episode sunsets, making for a peaceful ending.
