English Dub Review: The Millionaire Detective “If Money be not thy Servant, it will be thy Master”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Haru and the other members of his unit help the First Division with security for an embassy when a president from the Republic of Poliador seeking support for a damn project in his country with Japan arrives. Meanwhile, Daisuke is a guest to the president on behalf of his grandmother for the signing. While Haru and the others are guarding the outside a murder occurs inside which leads the bodyguards to usher the president and Daisuke into a panic room. The First Division goes inside to support the bodyguards as Haru and the others patrol the perimeter when a bodyguard jumps over the walls and runs prompting Haru to chase after the man.

When Haru reaches the man he jumps off the building and leaves with no choice since there is no signal Haru heads back to the embassy. Meanwhile, Daisuke attempts to figure out what’s going on, and then they find a bomb in the closet that shoots out toxic gas. He tries to use HEUSC to get the bomb’s schematics but the AI refuses to help him. Daisuke is left with no choice and uses his own knowledge to suppress the gas from getting to them with his jacket. At the last minute, Haru opens the panic room and they rush out and close it immediately. Later Daisuke uses HEUSC to view the police going through the dismantled bomb parts.

Our Take:

This episode was a decent episode on Haru and Daisuke as they work both on the inside and outside to stop a bomb containing deadly gas. The plot really builds up that moment from the beginning with the bodyguard murdering the embassy chef over the bomb, then the discovery of the body to the president being in the panic room, and Haru chasing after the bodyguard who later jumps off the building. Furthermore, the hints with the janitor and star-shaped key were great to add suspense for the audience in hopes that Haru and the others will figure out how to get into the panic room using the second-star key. Meanwhile, the First Division is off doing their own thing and they’re pretty slow in comparison to Daisuke and Haru.

Now the episode’s title is a big hint to one of the scenes when Daisuke orders HEUSC to get the blueprints to disarm the bomb. The pause before HEUSC replied that he doesn’t have the authorization to obtain the blueprints is chilling. As much as Daisuke controls how HEUSC is used, HEUSC can control the information that Daisuke gets to use in these situations. It’s frightening that Daisuke can’t access them since his family’s company produced the parts for the bomb. It’s also the first time that HEUSC denies Daisuke’s orders, especially in this life-threatening situation. The Kambe family is starting to look suspicious with their company responsible for manufacturing the parts used in the bomb. Furthermore, in this life-threatening situation, Daisuke’s cut off from communicating with Haru and he’s essentially powerless figuratively and literally thanks to the jammer in the parking lot. However, he does try to prevent the toxic gas from getting to him and the other men which was a good contrast to show that Daisuke isn’t always reliant on his AI.

It was refreshing to see that Haru is the one saving Daisuke when he opened the panic room door, and not the other way around. Haru’s hands-on method was good at revealing the perpetrator’s purpose with the bomb: to protect his homeland from being flooded. That small tidbit of information patches up the episode’s events and establishes a bit of sympathy for the deceased bodyguard. I enjoy seeing Haru and Daisuke’s partnership even when they can’t communicate with one another.

Now the sudden focus on Haru’s coworker, Chosuke Nakamoto has me curious about his role in the next few episodes. First the mention of his retirement along with the brief scenes of him in the middle and at the end when he’s viewing the parts with the other guy. It’s clear that this episode is building up to something with Chosuke in the fold. Perhaps it has something to do with Kambe’s family company since it appears that the old man is knowledgeable about the company products.

Hopefully, there will be some answers in the next episode about the Kambe family and Chosuke Nakamoto while Haru and Daisuke go out and stop crime.
