Our Take:
Halloween and Christmas are only many months away from us. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the holidays early, especially when you have these cool colleagues around. This week’s episodes center on the employees celebrating Halloween and Christmas in their own awkward and adorable way.
The first episode sees the company hosting a work party, thanks to their company president, a descendant of the Nurarihyon spirit. The party consists of a costume contest with a 100,000 yen prize for the best group costume. With that amount of money, it’s no wonder everyone wants a piece of that cake. Unfortunately, their quest to win the contest proved to be challenging when the pumpkin costumes they decided to wear were all sold out. This resulted in the employees resorting to wearing different outfits.
Himuro and the others dress up as vampires for the Halloween party, thanks to Fuyutsuki. Although, Fuyutsuki went a tad overboard with her realistic approach, as her fake blood literally froze Himuro in fear. But, of course, Fuyutsuki also gets flustered by how Himuro looks in his vampire costume, making them awkward throughout the party. Thankfully, that didn’t last long when Himuro and Fuyutsuki decided to walk home in their costumes.
As for Katori, his situation was just as embarrassing as Himuro’s, as he forgot to bring the costumes he made for himself and Otonashi. Fortunately, Fuyutsuki saved the day by advising them to improvise with paper to become mummies that would curse people with paper cuts. Their improvisation resulted in Katori and Otonashi winning the contest and offering to share the prize money with Himuro and the group.
The second episode then has Himuro and his work pals going on a ski trip that Komori won in a contest. There, Himuro is excited to teach Fuyutsuki how to ski but later realizes he doesn’t know how to teach something to someone. Amid the frosty trip, the episode introduces us to Himuro’s little sister, Yukimi, a model and internet celebrity who works part-time at the ski lodge. But, of course, like most younger siblings, Yukimi can also be a handful for Himuro when she starts embarrassing him in front of his new work friends. To make things even more uncomfortable for Himuro, Yukimi became the latest victim of Fuyutsuki’s irresistible charm.
What makes this episode stand out for me is that we get to learn more about Himuro through his family. During their trip to the lodge, Himuro explains that his parents are also office workers, which would explain his decision to work in an office building. Then, we learn that Yukimi is also a descendant of a Snow Woman. However, we also learn that the Snow Woman’s descendants are known for having short tempers with each other, as Himuro and Yukimi argue constantly. We’ve seen Himuro occasionally miffed whenever something happens to Fuyutsuki throughout the season, but he expresses it calmly to avoid making snowstorms around him. So having him only act out aggressively toward Yukimi could serve as another obstacle to Himuro’s quest for love.
The episode also has Himuro and Fuyutsuki sharing another moment alone by the giant Christmas tree. Himuro gives Fuyutsuki a warm kitten blanket as a Christmas gift after worrying about her getting cold from his blizzards. However, Fuyutsuki doesn’t mind the cold, as she’s always warm when she’s near him. Himuro originally planned to give Fuyutsuki snowflake earrings but later changes his mind after overhearing about jewelry being too personal a gift for co-workers.
Overall, both episodes serve as wholesomely entertaining holiday treats that compensate for the show’s delay that occurred last month. The seventh episode gave me more humorous treats than tricks, with Katori and Otonashi being mummies and Fuyutsuki’s fake blood prank being the best parts. However, “The Little Sister Appears” happens to be the best of the bunch regarding its further exploration of Himuro’s family tree, mainly for his young sister Yukimi, who’s now his competition for Fuyutsuki’s love. Don’t you just love siblings?
