English Dub Review: The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter “The Guild and the Receptionist”

Overview

In a valiant effort to earn enough money for the $300,000 gold enrollment fee to the Hero Academy, Noir visits the Odin Adventurer’s Guild. However, the receptionist at the guild, Lola, doubts his skills, so he has to prove himself. Once she finds out he’s telling the truth, she begrudgingly offers him a reward along with a scavenger hunt for easy money…

Our Take

While the first episode established the right amount of fan-service and lewd sex jokes mixed with the action/fantasy elements such as the cure to Noir’s headaches that involve kissing a beautiful stranger. This time around more depth is added to the proceedings along with some decent action scenes and actual motivation behind the ecchi/sex jokes, much in the same way Kill La Kill attempted to find valid excuses for its lead characters to wear skimpy clothing in battles.

Of course, what’s easily the highlight of this episode aside from a few racy scenes involving creative methods to increase their abilities would have to be a Giant Rabbit monster Noir and his crew encounter later on. But the series of events leading up to it and their solution to stop the creature hilariously plays with expectations involving some oddly specific lewd animations.

Overall, I’m still enjoying the show, it’s fun, action-filled. And the best way I can describe its atmosphere is wholesomely lewd. Predictably Noir continues to perpetuate the “Anime Harem” trope in such a way that it’s charming and funny like the early episodes of Tenchi Muyo but not cringe-inducing like Ranma 1/2.
