English Dub Review: The Day I Became a God “The Day of Battling Tiles”

Overview

Hina/Odin finds out about Yotua’s celebrity crush who goes by the name of Kako Tengan. In an effort to help Youta execute Hina’s latest scheme involving a game of Mahjong (A timeless & traditional game that’s often popularized in many gambling circles in Japan), he may have a once-in-a-lifetime experience to meet her. While in a separate subplot, we’re learning more about how Suzuki Hiroto’s investigation may have a potential connection to Hina herself…

Our Take

So far this episode was pretty funny but it does feel like they just burnt two episodes for gags without anything resembling character development or plot. We’re 4 episodes in and I still feel like I have no idea what this show is actually leading towards. I am struggling to put together the scientific and technological info that we the audience have been told.

On the other hand, this episode felt like pure filler. The pacing is all over the place, and the story feels almost nonexistent. Perhaps it’s meant to be like a Slice of Life, everyday human occurrences that Hina/Odin never had the chance to experience? Also, I’m still wondering how the hell this whole Hacker aspect connects to the show.

Overall, while I have basically no knowledge on how Mahjong works, I can still quite enjoy this episode for its bits of wacky comedy from Youta’s antics and Hina’s commentary though I wonder what exactly is Tengan’s role in the overall story as the episode ended with an updated countdown to the End of the world is now at “13 days left”.
