English Dub Review: The Daily Life of the Immortal King “Extra: The Director Is Not Home Today”

Overview: 

Wang Ling and the gang visit an animation studio.

Our Take:

This show has always been pretty hilarious but I have to say this one was over the top. It was both funny and sad. Funny because it was making fun of how bad the animation industry is but sad because well… this is an animated show so you know some of these things probably happened on this very show. But hopefully, I’m wrong and this is just a fun tongue-in-cheek episode commenting on it and finding a funny way to thank the hard-working animators on this show.

Part of me thinks that is what it was meant to be at least a little bit because at the end Wang Ling looks out to the fixed world and says “Thanks for making this beautiful world”. What made the episode interesting is that as things got progressively worse so did the animation. At one point it was nothing but storyboards and we even got to see real people. They basically decided to destroy the entire fourth wall.

Knowing that this is based on a light novel makes me wonder if that was something in the novel itself or if we got an anime original. It was a fun episode that I enjoyed but seems like we got away from the story with only a few episodes left.
