English Dub Review: That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime OAD 5

Overview:

As the kids of Class S are overpowered by a lower rank demon, a familiar foe comes to Ms. Tiss’s (Erica Mendez) aid in order to settle an old debt. With the help of Great Sage (Mallorie Rodak), Rimuru (Brittany Karbowski) figures out a way to administer the full potion to Count Guratol’s (Brad Venable) sick, bedridden wife as he ends his stint as a teacher and earns his colleagues and even more of his pupil’s respect in the process.

Our Take:

I fully walked into “Rimuru’s Glamorous Life as a Teacher Part 3” expecting Rimuru to ride in like the knight in shining armor that he is, just in the nick of time, and put the demon douche down in typical anime fashion. Part of me was even hoping for it on account of how much I wanted Rimuru to show him up. While I would have been satisfied had it played out that way, fortunately that isn’t what happened. The dark entity, Primordial Demon Noir, the powerful demon Chizuru fought previously, makes his return to save Ms. Tiss and the children. This kept things very interesting as for one I truly wasn’t expecting him of all people and to my naughty delight it turned out even better than I could’ve hoped for. His pure maliciousness was absolutely thrilling, and a stark contrast from what one would have gotten from Rimuru. Part of the amazement that comes with that scene is not only the intense gore but also just how unexpected his appearance is as well. With Ms. Tiss’s lips being sealed due to the pact, the only one who knows of this event and can speak freely on it is The Spirit of Light inside Kenya. With Noir playing a bigger role next season, the contract could have darker implications later on and nicely implement her into the narrative. Granted, this is just an OAD, so it’s very possible that none of this may have a larger impact later on. Even if it doesn’t, this was nonetheless a nice appetizer for Noir’s eventual main course of a role in season 2.

After curing Count Guratol’s wife and being loved by all in classic Rimuru fashion (who wouldn’t honestly), this chapter comes to a close. OAD 5 serves as nice connective tissue during the initial season and entertaining side adventure for fans of the franchise.

Also on a more unfortunate note, English voice actor, Brad Venable, tragically passed away recently, at the time of this writing. I would like to give my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. While very brief, he exceptionally performed Count Guratol like the true nobleman he was. May he rest in peace.
