English Dub Review: Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202 “Yamato’s Despair: Once More, the Devil’s Alternative”

There’s a fine line between tough and crazy and we’re flirting with it.

The Comet Empire’s Inferno Cannon hits but for the most part the combined Earth/Gamila forces are doing a good job of holding their own against invading forces. The bigger story is someone again messing with the Yamato’s engines and a new pill that could have potential ramifications for the survival of an infectious disease.

Our Take

This week’s episode is a tad all over the place in its execution but does its job in quickly completing the “Purgatory Chapter” and introducing the DNA of the incoming “Resurrection Chapter”. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked. The strength of the series is clearly the production in the action sequences which sometimes can cause the plot to be bursting at the seams which can cause elements of the plot to come off as not refined and as a result, rushed. As we get ready for the final arc that was originally showcased in Japanese in 2018, it will be interesting to see how the “Resurrection Chapter” is going to be fleshed out and if it will be a nice interlude to the “Nova Chapter” which just released in Japanese theaters on March 1st, and as such, probably won’t see any sign of until at least the Summer anime season here in the States in English dubbed formats.
