English Dub Review: Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202″ AD 2202 – Revive, Space Battleship Yamato”

A new journey.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Set three years after the conclusion of the 2199 prequel series, Star Blazers 2022 sees the Gamilas and Planet Earth now united in an intergalactic front featuring a ship called the Andromeda and military technology that weaponizes the alien tech offered to save mankind by way of Starsha Iscander. Earth is healthy and Kodai has taken Kodai’s role as a captain that now faces a new threat…the Gatlantis.

Our Take

It’s just like Planet Earth to weaponize an alien tech that was used to save our lives. It’s a backdrop to a series that now has all sorts of ramifications to look forward to, however, it’s not exactly clear yet what’s causing the commotion between the Gatlantis and the combined forces of Earth and Gamilas. Unlike 2199, 2022’s first chapter doesn’t do a good enough job of presenting any personal conflict, and in fact, quite the opposite. Sanada, Kodai, and even Yuki are all accounted for, and while definitely perturbed about our use of alien tech, there isn’t anything specific just yet as to what would cause any sort of conflict ongoing as of now. There could be a case of uneasiness between the relationship between the Gamilans and Earth’s finest, however, it appears we’re going to need a few more episodes to see what the hell is going on this series.

What is clearly on point is what this franchise is best known for, the killer space action. Even with Funimation featuring a couple of more space anime this season around, Star Blazers is definitely the crown jewel of the genre for the streaming service and it’s not even close right now. We just need to hurry up with the plot conflicts and get this thing going.
