English Dub Review: SSSS. Dynazenon “What’s Our Reason for Coming Together?”

Overview:

Dynazenon got rescued by Gridknight. Or at least it seemed that way until he attacked them too. Dynazenon was damaged in the battle. Koyomi split from the group and ended up rescuing Inamoto’s husband. He didn’t want to at first but ultimately did the right thing. Things didn’t look great for Yomogi and everyone, but after they resolved the misunderstanding with the Gridman Alliance they worked together to beat the kaiju.

Our Take:

This show has a really refreshing take on a lot of things. I really liked how they showed that Koyomi almost didn’t save Inamoto’s husband. Every time a hero is shown saving someone it seems like the easiest thing in the world. But here it shows that hero’s and in this case, Koyomi, are human. He didn’t want to save him at first, would it have been an awful and horrible thing to do? Yes, but it was a very human reaction as well and I appreciated that.

The villains also get a lot of characterization which is nice. We don’t know their motivations entirely yet but we know enough to tell they aren’t bad just to be bad. A lot of the tropes we see when the heroes experience setbacks get shown from the villain’s perspective here. After their kaiju gets defeated, they swear to do better next time, which you almost want them to. I just really appreciate how this show is written so far.

It’s not all perfect though. All the conflict between Yume and Yomogi apparently got resolved with nothing really happening or being said. Maybe it will come up again later but as it stands right now I think that was a missed opportunity. On another note, I hope Chise gets some development soon. I have a feeling that she and Koyomi are going to be linked in that regard, it almost seems like she has feelings for Koyomi but I could be wrong.

Getting new characters means we get new voice actors! The only one I could nail down at the moment was Monica Rial as Second. I guess that’s her name, for now, even the other characters questioned it. I really enjoyed what Monica brought to the show. We only got to see her character for a bit but I really want to see more from her.

I really enjoyed this episode and getting to see Gridknight and Dynazenon work together was awesome. The animation in the fight scenes continues to stand out. The CGI isn’t obtrusive and blends really well. Let’s see if it can keep it up.
