English Dub Review: SSSS. Dynazenon “What Is This Wavering Emotion?”

Overview:

Gauma gets “attacked” by a kaiju. They colored his face, and a lot of other things too. As far as attacks go, this one seems pretty tame for a kaiju. Once they find the kaiju, they aren’t really okay with Gauma just killing it. They all try the “Instance Domination” that the Kaiju Eugenicists use on the kaiju. It doesn’t work but Yomogi does seem to have something happen but we don’t know the specifics behind it just yet. Ultimately they end up having to fight the kaiju once it grows to a bigger size. Yomogi transforms Dyna Soldier into a cannon that Gridknight can use to defeat it.

Our Take:

Can kaiju feel? Do they have emotions? That opens a whole Pandora’s Box if they do let me tell ya. It’s one thing to kill mindless monsters but what if they can think and feel? Not so cut and dry then. I really like a lot of the philosophical questions posed here. I don’t know if they will do anything amazing with it beyond this episode but the idea is interesting at least.

We got another Koyomi flashback of him and Inamoto in their school days. Apparently, she “happened” across quite a lot of money and asked Koyomi to travel with her. I think he might be wondering how different things might have been if he went with her. I wonder if Koyomi’s “almost” relationship is meant to parallel Yume and Yomogi in any sort of way. For their sake, I hope it goes a bit differently for them.

Relationships seem to be a big part of this series because there are a lot of teases. For some reason now Mujina and Onija are a lot closer (even if they don’t want to admit it) and are honestly kind of cute. They say a lot of the same things and want to see the same movie. After the movie, Onija says the line he’s famous for now “I thought I was gonna die for sure”. I really do appreciate how they flesh out the antagonists too, makes me wonder if there is more to this kaiju thing that hasn’t been revealed yet.

Yume and Yomogi seem to be going strong and honestly, I am kind of invested in this relationship now. How this goes might affect how I view the series. It looks promising because Yume is suggesting doing things with Yomogi now so I can only hope. SSSS. Dynazenon has awesome action but is more interested in delving into its characters which I love. Each episode builds on the character’s relationships.
