English Dub Review: So I’m a Spider, So What? “Springtime, for Princes?”

Overview

The Spider-Lady has earned the title “Ruler of Perseverance”, and is thrilled to have unlocked the Evil Eye skill! Not only that, but her Appraisal skill has maxed out, which has resulted in a strange effect. Meanwhile, survival lessons begin at the academy.

Our Take

From this episode, things get very interesting, both for the human side and for Spider-Lady. On the one hand, the privileges that the elf sensei has are something to think about as it also works as a massive info dump. From what I can gather, two other students could be in the same situation as Spider-Lady, as a new girl that could be one of those two or just a different person who reincarnated but has the potential to be a supervillain, and then Spider-Lady was “upgraded” by a mysterious benefactor called “Administrator D” who maybe wants to give her support?

With her newly acquired skills, I’d say that Spider-Lady actually became a decently powerful character, much tougher compared to the first few episodes. There are so many narratives about levels and skills in this show though, I think one of the major problems with the show itself is the overuse of transparent white Japanese text covering half the screen where Spider-Lady proceeds to read her stats and upgrades. Unless you know one of Japan’s three alphabets (Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana) or have watched the subbed version which actually translates the text, none of this would probably make sense to you and it comes across as visual pollution. It’s a very serious problem within this series. But unless you care about details or what the text actually says, it’s better to simply ignore all the texts that appear on the screen unless it serves an actual purpose…

I’m glad we finally got students focused episode that did the impossible and found a way to make the human characters subplot somewhat compelling. I can see this show being a bit dark now. Some secrets are being revealed, and this anime could have a larger narrative outside of being an isekai, there is someone called “Administrator D” behind the scenes who is controlling all the skills and stats and it remains to be seen how far this individual’s godlike powers extend or if all of this will unravel or if both storylines will actually tie together to some capacity, but I’m sticking around to find out!
