English Dub Review: She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man “I Lied…”

Overview

The Titular “Wiseman”  Dunbalf finds himself unable to log out of the game and stuck, not in his old wizen body, but in the body of a tiny platinum blonde girl. Now, he must find a way to make it work and help his friend Solomon.

Our Take

Funimation has really been on top of the English dub with this anime thus far. Based on observation, there’s an underlying level of existential horror that comes with losing 30 or 20 years of your life compared to your fellow Isekai’d gamer friends, especially when no one appears to have aged. It makes it feel like none of them may ever age again and they’re trapped here for eternity in a sort of unaging purgatory. There’s even the possibility of them not being able to die (or respawn). But that remains to be seen.

Even worse,  Dunbalf’s current situation should be kept a secret that Mira is  Dunbalf in this new body he/she’s forcibly stuck in should the people undermine his true identity. and has to do toilet business which makes me question why the Animators or even the writer of its source material find this comical. We’re also left to assume that 30 years after, more monster sightings, in combination with the technological advancements of armored Jeeps, and poor CGI monsters left and right, which leaves more to be desired. Especially an action sequence involving a giant chicken monster. (I wish I made a word of this up…)

Episode 2 was infinitely better than the bizarre proceedings the previous episode had with the last 5 mins being nothing but an out-of-place music montage with very little dialogue. Still, it was plagued with less than favorable CGI, but that seems par for the course these days among your average Isekai. Hopefully, the story begins to pick up further as the plot progresses with any sort of stakes or a goal in the next episode.
