English Dub Review: Scarlet Nexus “Togetsu”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Now that Yuito is being branded as a traitor by the New Himukan government, it’s not like he can stick around in town and wait to see what happens. He decides that his only chance is for he and his posse to escape to the one place where they might be safe: Togetsu. It’s an independent state that isn’t connected with either New Himuka or Seiran, and it might be their last change. But unbeknownst to them, Kasane and her team has also made their way to Togetsu, and the welcome they’re met with isn’t exactly a warm one.

Our Take:

Scarlet Nexus takes a bit of a break this week with one of the slowest episodes in a while. There’s really not much going on in Togetsu except near the very end, which makes this episode kind of a chore to sit through. There are some interesting things brought up by the end, but by then it’s a little too late to regain any goodwill I started the episode out with. Most of the episode is spent talking about going to Togetsu, then walking toward Togetsu, and by the time we actually arrive there we’re pretty much out of time for this week.

It begins with where we left off last week: Yuito has been declared a dirty rotten no-good traitor by New Himuka and is in need of a safe place to stay while he decides what to do next. Nagi is AWOL again, so after some deliberation he makes the decision to go ahead and try to make it to Togetsu. It seems like the only decent plan at the moment, but it’s not without its challenges, namely that they have no idea what awaits them in the mysterious area.

Kasane finds out first. (I guess she and her team are faster walkers, or maybe Seiran is closer to Togetsu than New Himuka?) When they arrive, Kasane is greeted like a long lost relative at first, and it seems like that might be because she is! Her being connected to the strange folks at Togetsu would explain a lot of things about her, although it is a little iffy that she doesn’t recall any of her early memories of the place.

Kasane’s connection to Togetsu is an interesting revelation to go out on, but I think I’m most curious about Kagerou and his connection. It’s revealed early on in this episode that Togetsu used to be his home, but that he left it because he’s a missionary or something? Honestly, this feels very strange and I wish it had been brought up in earlier episodes to sort of set the stage for this week’s events. Because by the end of it, it sure seems like he may have set them up on purpose—either that, or he knew what was coming and didn’t want to face it with his friends. Either one is a bad possibility, but I guess we’ll have to wait until next week to find out what he’s all about… and what Yuito is going to do when he learns the truth.
