English Dub Review: Revenger: “Nowhere to Run”

Overview: Kurima (Aaron Campbell), Usui (Christopher Wehkamp) and the gang find themselves in hiding, deciding where they stand with the Chapel and who their true enemy is.

Our Take: Uzui and Isarizawa discuss Shishido’s main goal in taking over Matsumine’s opium trade. Their chat and Uzui’s one-on-one time help distinguish Shishido as a threatening presence in his brutality. It makes the Revengers’ position even more intense as they find themselves in hot water with the Chapel.

With Raizo grateful for Yeun’s help in saving his life, it offers him the potential of a hopeful future. His new lease on life makes for an intriguing decision in whether he’ll commit seppuku or continue as a budding artist.

When Uzui confronts the Chapel, it leaves one with more questions than answers. However, the Chapel and Uzui’s debate over the righteousness of their assassinations fails to employ any uniquely thought-provoking stance.

There is still no clear answer as to whether the priest is feigning ignorance or really in cahoots with Shishido. However, barring any surprises, the show seems to telegraph that the Chapel nun is with Shishido, trying to get Soji to weed out Kurima from the group. While Soji’s uncertainty has been an element, the thought of him becoming a traitor is hard to fathom. It continues to set the stage for Shishido and the Revengers’ final conflict.

If all these details feel familiar, that’s because most of them are. This episode acts as padding, unfortunately, for the greater season, overall. It rehashes many plot points surrounding the group’s enemy. It remains to be seen if the few developments added will be meaningful, or just clear misdirects, as the series draws closer to the end.
