English Dub Review: Revenger: “Fortune is Fickle and Blind”

Overview: As they enter Nagasaki, Raizo (Aaron Campbell) and the Revengers are tasked with taking out a drug ring leader.

Our Take: Can Kurima really change ways of being an obedient killing machine? That is the question that tantalizes in whether or not Raizo will evolve beyond his nature. It also instills an on-edge conflict between Nio and Usui. It enforces how much of an antagonist the boy is and how he keeps Usui in check with his erratic bloodlust.

This episode does a good job of illustrating how that divide extends beyond the group and to that of Nagasaki’s local government officer, Isarizawa. He serves as an effective means of applying pressure to the gang, looking for Kurima’s whereabouts after his recent assassination.

Speaking of the samurai, he has a new bunkmate in fellow Revenger member, Soji. They have instant chemistry in how much of the quintessential odd couple they are with how childish Soji is, especially with Kurima’s serious demeanor.

Their dynamic makes way for a little contest to see who can kill the most opium dealing scumbags. It allows for a short, but sweet showcase of their silent, but deadly skill. Most importantly though, it nicely shows how honorable each is, demonstrating their common ground. For Raizo, it’s allowing himself to tie on purpose and with Soji, it’s honoring his deal to share their room. It is a wholesome moment that organically brings them together.

With even Teppa giving his reservations about their newest addition, it will be interesting to see how the team proceeds with Raizo, especially as he grows closer with everyone.
