English Dub Review: Pop Team Epic “The Age of Pop Team Epic”

The grand mecha finale.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

The Age of Pop Team Epic:
The group of overlords from the first episode meet again, bemoaning their bad luck at Pop Team Epic being a success. It was supposed to be a regular, cute, slice of life before the two girls took over. Like this, there’s no way they will achieve seasonal hegemony. To make things right, they dispatch a team of hitmen to take them all out.
Popuko and Pipimi turn the tables on the assassins, and thinking it’s Takeshobo, vow revenge. When they reach and destroy the Takeshobo offices, they realize that Takeshobo invested absolutely nothing into their anime. The true culprit is actually King Records.
They invade King Records’ homebase, and challenge the bosses. Together, the bosses merge and activates King Records’ final form: the Akashic Records. Pipimi and Popuko combine into one, and destroy King Records. Victory is in grasp, but in exchange, Pipimi turns to stone. Popuko weeps over her when all of a sudden, Aoi Shota appears. He has the ability to go back in time, and they reset the timeline.
The girls do the same thing over again, but this time Pipimi remains unharmed. They high five, and Aoi Shota sings and dances to the ending song.
Wild, absolutely wild. I completely lost it when Aoi Shota appeared, unanimated. The fact that this was interspersed with Gundam parodies also made it. What a crazy segment to highlight a crazy series.

Score

10/10

Bob Epic Team (1):

Popuko goes searching for her glasses. She wanders off the planet, and finds a pair on the moon. An alien appears, claiming the glasses are his. An old man also appears, insisting on the glasses. The three of them slowly advance towards a black hole.

As someone with glasses, losing your glasses and forgetting where they are is absolutely real. This one goes beyond the original strip with the three of them fighting over the glasses- a little too over the top.

Score

7/10

Mobage:
The player fuses two Pipimi cards. The rarity increases, but the final art ends up either being a kiwi, or regular Pipimi.
This looks oddly familiar to Fate/Grand Order. And of course, mobages have some method of screwing you over, one way or another. Usually, cards with combined duplicates get a power up or even new art, but this time, the art degrades.
Score

8/10

Victim Blaming:

A talking hamster pops out of a schoolgirl’s bag, excited to finally be in school. When she scolds him, he starts crying, asking for her to not hit him. An onlooker looks on in shock, but the girl insists that the hamster always plays the victim.

This isn’t one I thought would be adapted. Which one is telling the truth?

Score

7/10

Popping Destruction:

In a chorus of many Popukos and Pipimis, the two girls sing a song about growing up…. that quickly turns into a song about destruction.

The felt dolls are back, and with a catchy song that’s as ridiculous as the first. The dissonance between the cuteness of the song and what the lyrics are actually saying is such a good time.

Score

8/10

Other Skits:

The girls parody Death Crimson. They rehash some old skits.
