English Dub Review: Plunderer “It was Delicious”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Licht and Hina head into town to browse through the local market, but they are surprised to run into Lynn. She and Hina somehow enter into a rivalry to spend time with Licht, and Nana quickly turns it into a weird cooking competition somehow?

The two girls have very different methods when it comes to making soup, but in the end, Licht is spared having to make a decision by the arrival of Lieutenant Iron Jail, who is dismayed to find that Lynn and Pele have not arrested Licht yet. The two of them duel, until Nana yells at them for making a mess. Everyone parties late into the night, and by the time Jail wakes up, Licht is long gone.

Our Take:

Coming into Plunderer, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I had heard about the weird number gimmick, but it doesn’t really factor into things with this episode. It was Delicious is pretty much just a straight up comedy episode that has a plot that could fit into any other anime series. It was kind of fun to watch, but not really something I’d encourage people to start the show for.

The best part of the episode was probably seeing the different approaches to gathering ingredients taken by the two ladies. Lynn gets her vegetables from the market, courtesy of an overly-friendly local shopkeeper. Her stew is made with love. Hina, on the other hand, makes her concoction by using pieces of a fresh bear she’s trapped from the forest. (“Like a savage hunter who’s spent decades in the mountains,” Pele comments.) It makes for a surprisingly successful recipe, and everyone has to admit that hers tastes the best.

In the end, Licht is too much of a coward to decide one way or another, and then he breaks the ropes holding him with his six pack and proceeds to wreck the town square with Jail. Kind of a boring end to a mildly amusing episode. But next week’s promises to hold more mystery, as an after credits scene shows Jail and his underlings finding that the town of Linden has been destroyed… but by what?
