English Dub Review: Overlord: “The Last King”

Overview

Ainz and his army marches towards the royal capital to finally annihilate the Re-Estize Kingdom. Various forces prepare themselves for the coming onslaught. Before the last battle, Zanac rides alone to meet with Ainz for a peaceful discussion….

Our Take

It’s clear that Ainz definitely didn’t take into the account of the random mech-suit looking knight in red that appeared to destroy both his Death Knight and Death Warrior, and everyone leaned it on the fact that Ainz’s somehow anticipated this despite his inner thoughts claiming otherwise. But regardless, everyone is ready for for action. Ainz’s Sorcerer Kingdom’s invasion is word to the Re-Estize Kingdom, taking them by surprise that more of their land is slowly falling into ruins thanks to Marquis Raeven, and if they want to salvage as much of their forces as possible, they have to start now with Prince Zanac’s work.

The Blue Rose meeting Lakyus’s father Azuth who comes across as a horny bastard, and what so are the chances of them meeting the Slane Theocracy’s Black Scripture for a truce fighting for a common goal? To me, seeing them is a big deal because upon research, they kinda have ties with that brutal killer Clementine from season one. Of course what overshadows most of this plot and easily the highlight of this episode is a long table meeting between Prince Zanac and Ainz, and one can tell that Zanac has the interests of the kingdom at heart, while Ainz just desires destruction that would create a legacy for the Sorcerer Kingdom and Nazarick. The long talk about happiness and respect towards Ainz despite his go-ahead to ravage destruction upon the Re-Estize Kingdom makes Zanac a really respectful and good character who knows where his loyalty are. However the ending takes an unexpected direction on Zanac’s end that even caught me off guard…

The sudden tone shift of human to monster is seamless. There’s this weird juxtaposition that shows the ironic nature of both sides where Ainz despite being an undead creature and going into war, was willing to have a civil conversation with Zanac without resorting to any kind of dirty tricks was possibly the most respectful thing he did with his foe, while nobles on Zanac’s side were cowardly assholes who threw their civility out the window in the worst ways imaginable. I think Ainz had a level of respect for the prince, and to put it mildly, the nobles doing what they did only made things worse… With three episodes left of this season, it remains to be seen what this all will culminate towards and how this all ties together. But you can be damn sure it’ll be interesting!
