English Dub Review: My Hero Academia “That Which is Inherited”

Overview(Possible Spoilers):

Deku’s match begins and he has a similar plan to Bakugo. The only problem is he is going up against Monoma. Also working against him is awakening to a new power that he doesn’t know how to control. With some help from Uraraka and Shinso though everything gets calmed down. Even with the danger, Deku’s new power poses the match is not stopped and will continue.

Our Take:

This show seems to give me the feels with every episode. Whether it’s super hype or something else. In this one, I could feel Deku’s frustration. He has been working so hard to harness his power and this was probably his best chance to show off how far he has come. As we all know though, life usually has other plans for us.

Deku awakens to a new power, and honestly, we all (Deku included) should have expected it. One for All is a stockpiling quirk so it stands to reason that it stored the previous users’ quirks as well. I am a little worried whenever something like this comes up because it’s very cliche shounen. Your character can’t defeat the current villain? No problem! Give them a new power!

My Hero Academia is one of my favorites because it isn’t your typical shounen. So, I hope it doesn’t go too far down this path but to be fair as I stated, it was at least foreshadowed. I still feel really bad for Deku, he barely got a chance to show off his new mastery. I teared up just seeing how frustrated he was.

Romance fans where are you at?! There was a very little romantic moment between Deku and Uraraka as she saved him. There were some really good quotes in this episode but one of my favorites was from one of her flashbacks. She poses the question “Who protects the heroes when they’re the ones hurting the most?” and it’s an interesting thought. Uraraka stands out among a lot of other female characters because she isn’t constantly needing to be rescued. She recognizes her weaknesses and tries to make them a strength.

All the way back in season two she recognized her fighting weakness against Bakugo and learned “Gunhead martial arts” which she uses again in this episode. I really respect how Horikoshi does character development. Not all of the female characters are written as well and there is definitely room for improvement but he does better than most. I can’t wait to see how this one unfolds.
