English Dub Review: My Hero Academia “Lemillion”

Overview:

Mirio catches up to Chisaki.

Our Take:

This truly is Mirio’s episode, and what an episode it is.

While we have focused more on Midoriya’s guilt more over the course of the season, we know that Mirio has felt incredibly guilty as well. After all, it was Mirio’s call to let Eri go with Chisaki unharmed. He charges ahead, and is the first to reach Chisaki. Even though he had to hold himself back before, now is his chance to make things right, and he is absolutely going to do so. He is completely by himself, so all he has to back up his own words are what he can do without help.

What unfolds is Mirio’s test of heroism. He made a promise to Eri, to be her hero and take her away safely, and he intends to uphold that. Mirio may just be a student, but he holds his own and manages to beat back Chisaki. Chisaki may have overwhelming and destructive powers, but Mirio has worked incredibly hard to get to where he is. The show makes it very clear that Mirio’s quirk is nothing special on its own, but can be used for devastating results if used properly. His hard work truly does pay off; even when confronted with a chaotic battlefield, he unleashes it all.

It also, incredibly tragically, turns out that they have perfected the quirk destroying drug. Mirio leaping in front of Eri means he takes the bullet for her, and is therefore unable to fight to his maximum potential. But he keeps on fighting! You think he would retreat, but he means it, he’s going to keep on fighting, no matter what. He does surprisingly hold his own, but Mirio ends up badly injured, partially skewered through. You really have to give him a lot of respect. He’s just a high school kid, but he is absolutely committed. I felt such a thrill watching him do everything he could.

This was such an episode. I felt like it was too short; I finished and thought that there has to be more, there wasn’t enough. Mirio is really a standout character, he went from being seemingly aloof all the time to having one of the most hard-hitting scenes in the whole thing. It was such an exhilarating episode, and going from cheering Mirio on to worrying about him was such a great tonal shift. He’s a good kid!
