English Dub Review: My Hero Academia “Have a Merry Christmas!”

Overview:

Bakugo and Todoroki are interviewed after stopping the villains last time. Since their interview didn’t go great Aizawa brings in Mt. Lady and Midnight for some interview training. Meanwhile, Deika City is attacked by villains. The work-study program for heroes in training is starting back up again. Who might Deku and everyone decide to train with?

Our Take:

Looks like we are getting two episodes of “palette cleansing” before the next arc kicks off. I know when it comes to shounen shows we are supposed to be in it for the action but you know what? I really love the slice of life moments and for a show that has “Academia” in the name, we haven’t got much school stuff for a while. I mean I guess the battle training arc was school-related but I think you know what I mean.

After their battle with the villains in the last episode, Bakugo and Todoroki were invited to a morning talk show for an interview. If you’re thinking “Bakugo on a morning talk show? I bet that wouldn’t go well” you are one hundred percent correct. Luckily for us, it’s hilarious. Todoroki is under the impression they are friends cause they have spent so much time together recently but Bakugo doesn’t feel the same. Most of the best moments in this episode go to Todoroki.

Speaking of Todoroki, his character arc is one of the best in the series. Seriously, go back to season two when he was first featured really prominently and compare him to now. He can still be cold (Heh get it?) but that is usually in battle. He has really opened up and is trying to connect with his classmates like when I mentioned he thought he and Bakugo were friends. One of the best moments of the episode was when he was told during interview training that his smile would make the ladies drop dead. He responded by saying “If I smile they’ll die?!” never change you, sweet innocent child.

I’m killing it with segues today, because speaking of sweet innocent children, Eri showed up in this episode. 1-A was having a Christmas party and she showed up in Santa Claus attire. She was dubbed Eri Claus, how adorable is that? Even more adorable was how she kept doing different things associated with different holidays.

Everything was on point and fun in this episode as any palette cleanser should be. There is a post-credits scene where Todoroki invites Deku and Bakugo to join him doing the work-study with his father. Will they take him up on the offer and train under Endeavor? Conventional wisdom says yes but I suppose we will see in the next episode. I know the sub is taking a break this week so the dub might soon as well but I think we should still get next week’s episode first.
