English Dub Review: Mob Psycho 100 “Collision ~Power Type~”

Psycho Killers! Qu’est-ce que c’est?

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Teru recovers from his previous fight as Claw wreaks havoc on Seasoning City. Everyone is raring to go to help out, though Reigen decisively tells them to sit it out…that is, until he gets a call that the fire that burned down his office won’t be insured, invigorating him to hunt down the arsonist! They use floating telekinetic cars as decoys while another part of their group infilitrates Claw’s tower through the sewers. While that’s happening, Reigen watches over Mob’s unconscious body, but they’re forced to flee when more Claw goons come to deal with them.

He manages to knock them out with the cursed cologne, but that only makes their leader, a big guy named Shibata, turn into some sort of Mauve Hulk. Dimple possesses Mob to do battle with him, but the guy’s might is too great to hold on. Miraculously, Mob’s body lands in front of the Body Improvement Club, where Dimple possesses the president to fight on equal muscle ground. This only slows him down, but Mob awakens to finish the fight.

Meanwhile, Sho and Ritsu arrive at the tower to face Sho’s father.

OUR TAKE

Remember in Dragon Ball Z when Goku would be out of commission for a little while and so the weaker characters got a chance to shine before he got better and saved the day? This episode kind of felt like one of those, but in a good way. It’s important to show that there are other capable fighters here besides Mob so that not every battle has to rely on him to win…even though that’s what happened this time anyway, but what can you do. Actually the cast has kind of ballooned into at least a couple dozen since this big final arc started, hasn’t it? Like it’s cool to see a lot of these characters back for such a huge event like this, but it becomes hard to keep track of them after awhile.

Though at least in this episode, I’d say they were used pretty effectively. Reigen and Dimple show how their respective abilities have kept them useful for so long, the other psychic kids get to use their powers in crucial ways, and even the Body Improvement Club gets involved in the fray for something more substantial. Despite how much I loved the personal, every day kind of issues that Mob would face at school and with friends, seeing this big a calamity really should involve everyone for at least part of the lead up to the end since this is their city too. I just prefer the character development stuff over the fighting since this show has made it clear that it can really shine with the former more than the latter. Neither are bad at all, just that I like one more than the other.

We also get a bit of info on Sho’s father Toichiro, who is our ostensible antagonist. He seems pretty flat as a character at the moment, considering world domination is a pretty tired motivation, but I think he might serve as another foil for Mob like Keiji Mogami did a few weeks ago. Someone who has let their psychic abilities cloud their judgment about how human they really are and planning to control others with it. No guarantee that Mob will face Toichiro in the end, but given that Sho and Ritsu will be facing him first, I have a feeling Ritsu’s seeming death will motivate another 100% boost in Mob to instigate the final battle. Just a hunch, it could go any other way for all I know.
