English Dub Review: Mix: Meisei Story “We’re Losing”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

After two friggin’ recap scenes, we kick off “We’re losing” at the bottom of the fifth inning with the game tied at zero. By the end of the episode, and about three innings later, it’s a 2-1 game with Kenjou High School in a lead over Meisei High School. Scoring the runs are Toma Achibana with a homer in the fifth and then Akai scorching a two-run homer a couple of innings later. The real drama develops when Toma gets hit with a pitch though fortunately, the hit wasn’t on his pitching arm. However, there’s a tease that the hot-headed ace may do something about it later in the game.

Our Take

Boy, does this show know how to stretch out a game? In fairness, most baseball games run for about three hours so if we needed four more episodes of Kenjou vs Meisei I guess that wouldn’t completely unrealistic. In any event, new intros and outros make their debut in the 14th episode of Mix: Meisei Story though that kinda doesn’t matter because I don’t speak Japanese which is still only slightly less polarizing than the decision to not have one, check that, two recaps of what happened in the previous episode of Mix. One probably would’ve sufficed, but if I had a choice between two recaps with a flashback scene that didn’t make any sense or the wrap of a game that’s now about to go into its third episode, I would’ve taken the latter option.

In any event, I am enjoying the in-game action even if it is kinda fool-hardy to believe that the ace pitcher is also counted on in being team Meisei’s leading scorer, but I understand that this is Japanese-Hollywood and should be treated as such. I’ll take any and all baseball action over the silly romantic comedy stuff (Otomi was getting game updates from a super horny Ichiban while she was on the shitter) any day of the week.
