English Dub Review: Magical Girl Raising Project “Collect Magical Candies!”

You have to ask yourself if you feel lucky!

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS BELOW)

This episode shows us the aftermath of FAV’s downsizing announcement of the magical girl’s workforce. We have a flashback of how Best Girl Top Speed and Tsundere Ripple met, as well we got to see for the first time the Wild Wild Calamity Mary, who seems to be an A-grade asshole. La Pucelle and Snow White are in the lead with the candy collection, the way the 8 winners will be decided, and we also get to know Lazy Bun Nemurin, who can enter dreams of others so doesn’t have to go out. Even Magical Girls can work from home in this day and age! We also got some time with Control Maniac Ruler and her gang showcasing her poor management, and even poorer, people skills.

Finally, we see Nemurin lose the contents due to her points, having a lot of thanks to her job at Dreamworks (I am sorry, but I couldn´t resist), do not count in the real world. And it seems that the termination of the contract is way more literal that it was assumed.

OUR TAKE

While I enjoyed this episode, I felt like a lot of information was lost in the adaption, even more than usual. The whole episode felt rushed to me and it harmed my ability to enjoy it more than I would have otherwise. I like the character designs, despite how fan serviceable they are, but there is something to be regarding their personalities. They felt more like an otaku pandering gallery and not more in deep characters. A shame when many of their backstories can be worked for some interesting angles (looking at you Nemurin and Ripple).

Also, Nemurin termination at the end let me… as usual. Like I said, a lot was left out so I haven’t formed a proper connection with any of the characters to care enough when they are offed. Except for Top Speed, because she is that awesome.

Regarding the dub, I like the voice acting, especially Best Girl Top Speed, though Calamity Mary’s voice gave me the impression of being am old transvestite role playing as a female version of Dirty Harry. The animation is well done, and I really like both opening and ending themes.
