English Dub Review: Lastman “Family Is Always Complicated”

The perfect episode title to describe this time of year.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

This week’s episode provides a flashback to Dave and Howard’s upbringing and we also learn that it’s totally Howard’s fault that Richard, Siri, and others are going around town killing Rens and more importantly how Siri came to be one and why Dave can’t just kill her. The question has to be asked, would Dave still be alive had it not been for Howard’s shenanigans?

Our Take

Despite being produced in France, Lastman exhibits a lot of qualities that indicate anime lineage. Whether it’s the crazy story, the stellar action sequences, or in this case, the obligatory flashback episode, Lastman hits all the programming highlights of a steady anime.

And this one was good, as “Family Is Always Complicated” gives, even more, weight to our principal characters, and better yet, seasons the show’s run with a bit of suspense on the account of Howard and just how well he’s going to be able to hold up going forward with Siri. It looks like we’re in the homestretch where we’re going to be getting some resolution in the future.

I liked that we got to spend a bit more time with Howard this time around as it gave us a nice break from the rest of the cast of which we’ve spent a lot of time with. Howard’s got a bit of a dark history, but Dave’s is even worse, so it’ll be interesting to see where this goes.
