English Dub Review: Konohana Kitan “Night of the Summer Festival”

Silent night.

Overview:

During their morning tea, the employees of Konohanatei overhear the sound of Taiko drums coming from the nearby town. An excited Yuzu asks where the sound is coming from and she is informed that something called the Yoimiya Festival is happening. Because Yuzu has never had the opportunity to experience a festival for herself, Kiri asks the group to takes turns guiding the blonde kitsune through the festivities.

Because Satsuki’s guests were not coming back early, she was tasked with chaperoning Yuzu and Sakura. Despite the obvious apprehension at first, Satsuki eventually begins to enjoy both the festival and the company of both girls.

During the night, Yuzu participates in something called the bone dance, a ritual that attracts spirits when performed. The confusion seems to set in as a female spirit informs the young fox that she’s going the wrong way and should return to her friends.

Our Take:

The episode was fun to watch. If you’ve ever been to a 4th of July celebration or any summer festival, you can relate to the goings on of this episode. The bone dance reminded me a lot of what Native Americans call the Ghost Dance.
