English Dub Review: Katana Maidens: Toji no Miko “Short Version Digest “

In a nutshell, this is a half-hour recap that highlights all the major storyline events that happened over the course of the first 12 episodes, but according to the episode listings on both Funimation and Wikipedia, this is acknowledged as “Episode 12.5”.

Our Take

Given how far the show sometimes dragged in places during the course of 12 episodes, It’s basically just as the name implies and helps remind the audience who’s who along with what’s going on in preparation for the next 12 episodes to come. While most TV shows are often guilty of recap episodes in the form of highlights and clip shows, This really isn’t any different as it simply replays footage with narration that explains to us what’s happened.

It does a good job abridging the major events that lead up to their battle against Yukari. From when the two leads Kanami & Hiyori first met, to them going on the lam, to meeting other allies during their journey to get evidence against Yukari, their recruitment with Mokusa, The moral decay within the Sword Administration using Aradama blood for body-enhancing experiments, and finally their intense battle against Yukari are all carefully condensed within a half-hour to remind the audience what was at stake within a half-hour.

I guess this could work for people who need to catch up on what’s going on within the show, or have never seen this series before. But for someone who’s followed this series since the beginning, it feels kinda pointless unless you just want a quick refresher that spares you from devoting hours of your life to rewatching all 12 episodes again.

Overall, while I question why it was necessary for a recap episode to get an English dub, I’m still eager to see the aftermath of what’s become of this show’s universe along with finding out how everyone is doing long after their full-scale battle against Yukari.
