English Dub Review: Kaguya-sama: Love is War “Miyuki Shirogane Wants Girls to Fall for Him / Nagisa Kashiwagi Wants to Console / Miyuki Shirogane Wants to Sing / Kaguya Wants to Kick Them Down”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Though Shirogane is a great class president, he can’t carry a tune in a bucket. He’s faked singing the school anthem over the years, but when Fujiwara finds his secret out, she tries to help him with singing lessons. Only they don’t go so well, and when the fateful day comes, she’s not at all sure how this music will play out. Luckily, things go better than expected.

Later on, Kaguya tries to dig up dirt on Miko and doesn’t find much due to her clean reputation. She did run for class president many times before in previous schools though, and always lost. She has strict ideologies and isn’t a forceful enough person to get them across to her voters. Kaguya offers a deal, but Miko is too staunch an idealist to take it, saying that she’ll soon conquer the current administration and restore order.

Our Take:

In its fifth episode, the second season of Kaguya-sama continues its streak of school club comedy with a number of new scenarios that feature our standard main characters along with Fujiwara and perhaps future class president Miko.

One of the best highlights of this episode was definitely Shirogane and his cowlick. He’s like a whole new man without it, and people notice! Of course, the vice president gets jealous. Then there’s an entire plotline with the president trying to con his way into a choir despite his awful singing voice. It’s a hilarious collection of scenes that make for some excellent camaraderie between Shirogane and Fujiwara.

But I think my favorite moments were between Kaguya and Miko. The current vice prez is convinced that the new girl has skeletons in her closet, and so enlists help to uncover them. But she’s got a hard time doing that, because Miko just seems like a girl ready to reform the school. After refusing Kaguya’s suspicious offer of tea and cookies, she gets offended when Kaguya offers to help her become the president next year if she’ll only let the current administration stay on for this one. She tells her that she and Shirogane are two of a kind, and it’s so funny to watch Kaguya’s reaction. Maybe this upstart is nicer than she thought! In the end, she can’t help but picture how nice an administration without Shirogane being the president would be… so much more free time! But then again, Miko says no to romance.

This episode showed off some of the second season’s most interesting moments yet. We got plenty of development for Fujiwara and Shirogane, as well as some new insights into Miko and what makes her tick. Her dynamic with Kaguya is stellar, and it’ll be cool to see what that means for the election in the next episode or two.
