English Dub Review: Kageki Shojo!! “Surely Someone”
Overview
The Romeo and Juliet auditions begin in earnest. Yamada looks back on her pre-Kouka years as she finds her bearings in her role. Sarasa revisits a conversation she overheard between Kouzaburou and Akiya.
Our Take
Focusing on two separate storylines this time around, was a very interesting way of showing Aya’s backstory, as it goes back and forth between the past and the present. I did like them comparing the romance of Romeo and Juliet to implied lesbianism. But it could be boosted by how naturally her friend confesses her love for her.
On Sarasa’s side, going back in time once more for her backstory, her acceptance into the Kouka school is celebrated by her only family that is her grandfather. But her childhood friend Akiya’s private talk with her father has some disdain in it which indicates that Akiya has been under a tremendous amount of pressure his whole life. It’s clear that Sarasa and Akiya definitely like each other, but the pressure of their families kinda makes it hard for them to be in a relationship.
Overall, the romance in this episode feels surprisingly more mature and real than I thought. it’s also kind of impressive how smoothly the episode changed gears to focus on Sarasa right after. It was fairly obvious that there was more to the relationship with her boyfriend and this changes things now as we finally see Sarasa’s clear motivations on what she’s been fighting for with her life i.e., be Lady Oscar like the stingray, accept Akiya into her life, and perform the best she can. But with one episode left, we can only hope that the last one ends the show with a bang!
Hi Ashley, thank you so much for reading and we love the feedback. Note that on that day we had 14th posts go up and only ten posts show on the front page, so it's possible the preview had already been archived by the time you got to it. One recommendation would be to add our RSS feed to your favorite news aggregator service like Feedly, this way you get all of the latest posts!
