English Dub Review: Jujutsu Kaisen “Boredom”

Overview:

Megumi (Robbie Daymond) and Nobara (Anne Yatco) meet some interesting new students from the Kyoto Prefectural Jujutsu High School. Gojo (Kaji Tang) has a little chat with the principal of said school, Yoshinobu Gakuganji (Kyle Herbert). Elsewhere, Yuji (Adam McArthur) prepares for a truly dark mission as he continues his work as a Jujutsu Sorcerer.

Our Take:

Despite being the name of the episode, “Boredom” is the last thing anyone will feel when watching this episode. After all, who could be bored after meeting the loud and boisterous third year student, Aoi Todo. Introducing himself to Megumi and Nobara, the man most definitely makes his presence known. His overwhelming physical strength only further bolsters Todo’s equally overwhelming personality and sets him up as an imposing opponent. Seriously, by the way he was able to brush aside Fushigoro’s cursed spirits with such ease by seemingly not going all out hypes me up for his future fights. Not just for him though. With Megumi doing just the same, his true power that he’s hiding also pumps me up. Even if these two don’t hash it out again, their hidden potential and the amazing animated fights that’ll come of that are enough to make me salivate.

He is not alone, however. He brings along with him uppity second year student and Maki’s twin sister, Mai Zenin. Mai is presented as a stark contrast to her more humble sibling and, similarly to Aoi, makes a strong impression. But in her case, it is due to how superior she presents herself as. However, what makes her significantly more interesting, maybe more so than Todo, is how similar she is to Maki as well. This episode kills two curses with one sorcerer as it not only introduces Mai but also helps flesh out her and Maki, even if just a little bit. Both feeling belittled by those more powerful around them, they both respond to it in their own unique way in how they present themselves. Because of this, it makes their chemistry all the more compelling. It also demands more screen time too, which will no doubt be given in the future Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc.

Speaking of, this episode does a lot and I mean, a lot of great work laying the foundation for what is to come. Especially in such a short amount of time too. Principal of the Kyoto school, Yoshinobu Gakuganji, also makes an appearance. So little is given, but based on his demeanor and what is said about him, he definitely looks to be more than meets the eye and an interesting antagonist later on. Also introduced is Kisumi Miwa and she is so incredibly adorable, words can’t even describe. Her fangirl passion for Gojo is heartwarming (but understandable) and her goofiness is so radiating. I am looking forward to seeing more of her also.

With the key players of the Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc already in place and the impending Vs. Mohito Arc just around the corner, Jujustu Kaisen finds itself in an exciting place for even more knockout episodes to come.
