English Dub Review: Interviews with Monster Girls “Tetsuo Takahashi Wants an Interview”

First episode…interview with a vampire. No seriously, that’s what this episode is about.

Spoilers Below

In the first episode of Interviews with Monster Girls, we’re introduced to a biology teacher by the name of Tetsuo Takahashi. He teaches at a school that features both normal and what are called “demi” students. The term “demis” is short for “Demi-Gods” and it basically means a bunch of students that feature genetic mutations. Interestingly enough, these students are welcome members of society and are even given stipends as support from the government to help cover basic needs.

On the first day, we’re introduced to three girls, all of whom are demis.  We’ve got Yuki, who is afraid to touch anyone for fear of hurting them due to her icy touch. We’ve got Hikari, a vampire that may or may not have tendencies to drink blood the old-fashioned way instead of just relying on the monthly rations sent to her by the government. And then we have Kyoko, a dullahan who walks around holding her own head while a blue flame comes out of her body’s neck…almost like a butane lighter.

Tetsuo appears to be fascinated by these students, and as such, starts the process of interviewing each of them. Problem is, Yuki wants nothing to do with Tetsuo, but Hikari’s more than willing to chat up with the bio teacher as opposed to heading to a class that is really hot and has too much sunlight. She eventually makes friends with Kyoko and convinces the dullahan to chat with Tetsuo which is scheduled to go down in the next episode.

Our Take

An interesting series. Imagine if X-Men didn’t have to constantly fight humans and instead there were systems in place to allow the harmonious cohabitation of mutants and humans, and that’s the concept of Interviews with Monster Girls. That said, I have a feeling that not all of the demis are going to be friendly for long, but that’s just conjecture at this juncture. I also have questions about Tetsuo’s fascination with the girls, concerning whether or not his interviews are entirely for scientific purposes or if he has any personal agendas that he wants to help see come to light. It’s too early to tell now, and I think we really just kinda set the table this episode less any REAL answers to sink our teeth into…BOOM! Vampire pun!
