English Dub Review: I’m Standing on a Million Lives “The Warrior of Light and Stranger of Darkness”

Overview:

As Yusuke (Zeno Robinson) makes his way out of the cave, he questions his role amongst the group and eventually comes to a great conclusion. Iu (Jeannie Tirado) battles the gargoyle as she fights to avenge her fallen comrade, Kahvel (Christina Vee). Cultivated by the very same friend who is down, she then awakens a strength that pushes her to new heights.

Our Take:

When “The Warrior of Light and Stranger of Darkness” began, it was nice to see the show come full circle and challenge Yusuke internally as well as externally once again. While it generally used the same flashbacks shown previously, there was fortunately some new material as well. Combined, the ways in which Yusuke had been cast out are utterly heartbreaking. Without hitting one over the head with exposition that feels unnatural, Yusuke’s isolation and loneliness feel that much more relatable and authentic. Scenes of bullying and alienation that are akin to what I have personally witnessed happen to people only cement that further and make it that much more painful. One can only hope that there is more of this later on as it allows one to sympathize and understand Yusuke better.

Besides Yusuke, Iu got some great spotlight too. She is finally starting to become adept on the battlefield and a real asset to the team. Her tenacity and spirit is impressive. It is very satisfying to finally see her come into her own and witness her talents blossom as she fights head on against the gargoyle. Also using the brief time stop when one levels up is yet another great full circle moment not to mention clever. Especially considering that initially Yusuke benefited from it unbeknownst that it would happen. It’s gratifying to see the team use aspects of the world like that to their advantage and learn from previous battles.

He didn’t put much stock into the life of one person, as he focused on the group as a whole initially. While tactically speaking it was a sound idea, it was also very cold. That’s why it was extremely pleasing and heartwarming seeing Yusuke save Kahvel. Also to accept his role as leader and how he can help Kusue and Iu through how feels about them (Yuka is noticeably absent from his mind funnily enough), nets him some well-founded growth. Hopefully now he will find himself more balanced in that he is a caring person yet strong and smart as a leader moving forward.
