English Dub Review: I’m Standing on a Million Lives “Heart-Racing Logout”

Overview:

While Iu (Jeannie Tirado) and Kusue (Valeria Rodriguez) look for some goods heading into Radodorpo, Yusuke (Zeno Robinson), Kahvel (Christina Vee) and Yuka (Tara Sands) try different tactics in completing the quest as well.

Our Take:

Taking a much needed breather, “Heart-Racing Logout” mainly takes a detour of sorts in that it is a lighthearted affair from the grave stakes that have been at play thus far. Yuka’s various schemes to initiate romantic situations between Yusuke and Kahvel make for some exceptionally funny moments. It is also great to see an extended amount of levity from Yuka as there has not been this much until now. I had mixed feelings about her character, initially, and that still hasn’t changed but this episode goes a long way in making her a lot more likable as the nerdy gamer that she is. The continuous video game references are also charming. So much so that, funnily enough, I related with Yuka’s gamer mentality due how similar romantic relationships are in countless visual novels and JRPGs (I’m looking at you Persona) With all that being said, I do also appreciate that they’re not forced or stereotypical either. Because of how true to life they are, they help in making Yuka the same too. As humorous as it was, it was just as equally hilarious watching all her strategies backfire in funny ways. The scenarios vary and move at a pretty rapid pace which in turn keeps it fresh. They’re fun. They’re breezy. Case closed.

This chapter does stumble a bit, however. The flashback of the enemy soldier Kahvel killed (didn’t bother learning his name because of how bland he was), did next to nothing in making me care about him in how flat it was. The fact that his king felt confidence in his “rugged features” was just plain odd and the attempt at an emotional attachment felt as if it was an afterthought. As the episode begins to wind down, Yusuke and his party complete a segment of their quest and reunite. With only three episodes remaining, it remains to be seen as to how and where it will end. With the simple task of mere traversal left and the threat from the enemy kingdom on the horizon, the pieces are falling into place for, at least, one more battle for the young heroes. Hopefully, this is indeed the final conflict for this season and another quest isn’t sandwiched in the midst of the final couple episodes. Lastly, the recurring joke of ‘being dumped’ with Yusuke was a clever one and fitting end to this brief respite of a ninth episode.
