English Dub Review: How NOT to Summon A Demon Lord “The Demon Lord’s Resurrection”

How to Summon A Predator

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Diablo and the gang meet Edelgard at the chosen place, which Diablo notices as the place he was first summoned. Despite hesitations, they all get to work summoning Krebskulm, with Diablo needing to pour his energy into Rem’s body to pull the demon out. When just putting a hand on her tummy doesn’t work, Edelgard suggests going though…a hole. So, we have the first instance of an exorcism through fingering, though I guess it’s better than going through the butt. With one big push of power, Krebskulm the true Demon Lord (Madeleine Morris) awakens to the shock and awe of everyone…mostly because it turns out she’s a little girl with barely any clothing. It also seems she’s lost both her memory and any idea of how to use her powers, meaning she’s not that much of a threat and tamed easily with cookies.

This is surprising, most of all to Alicia, who is oddly disappointed that she won’t be killing any of the Mortal Races, but I guess it’s better than having to fight her. Though they’re not going to be avoiding that entirely as an owl demon lands from the sky to greet the new Demon Lord. This is Eulerex, the oldest and strongest Fallen who has served multiple generations of Lords AND is someone Diablo actually recognizes from the game. However, when he hears Krebskulm doesn’t want to kill, he decides he needs to kill her in order to “reincarnate” the Demon Lord properly. Edelgard protects her but is no match for him, so Diablo steps in. Eulerex is surprised by his Reflection spell, as that’s supposed to be a power of a real Demon Lord, and then flees.

Continuing on their way, Alicia suggests they give Krebskulm a new name so they don’t draw any undue attention. As such, they decide to go with Klem. They finally make it back home, but because this series is dead set on putting me on an FBI Watch List, both Shera AND Klem strip naked to give Diablo a magic recharge. Meanwhile, Alicia recalls disturbing memories and reveals her intentions to use Klem to destroy the Mortal Races. Elsewhere, Saddler recovers and plots his own revenge.

OUR TAKE

Once again I find myself very close to giving this show a higher score, and then it has to go and throw in more scantily clad prepubescents. At least we finally get to know who that unidentified little girl at the end of the ED is, and it turns out she’s the Demon Lord in question that they’ve needed to summon this whole time. It did seem a bit anti-climactic that she could be made non-threatening so fast, but the preview for the next episode seems to indicate that won’t be the case for very long. Makes sense, seeing how we have two episodes left and we gotta get to that battle between her full powered form and Diablo somehow.

What I thought was especially interesting were the mixed reactions to Klem’s revival, not just from our heroes, but from other Fallen as well. Edelgard, being the more human/cute girl looking one, naturally is just loyal to her master no matter what she wants to do, but Eulerex, being the more burly and beast looking one, is more than ready to just scrap this version and start over. I don’t know exactly how this whole incarnation thing works, though apparently, Rem’s family has been dealing with containing Klem’s spirit for multiple generations, so there must be some connection there. There’s also the possibility that Diablo’s unique energy messed with the ritual and caused this incomplete result, but that’s just my guess.

And lastly, we have the slightly smaller reveal that Alicia has been pulling a Grant Ward from “Agents of Shield” on us, and turned out to be a villain hiding behind a boring character mask. She’s hoping to use Klem to kill the Mortal Races, and despite saying that term multiple times in this review, I’m not sure what that means exactly, since most if not all races are mortal, so maybe this means just humans, or maybe it means demi humans too or even the Fallen, but it seems this urge to destroy comes from an upbringing of neglect and abuse. That would certainly make me want to kill some people, don’t get me wrong, but a whole species? Sounds like a bit of an overreaction. I am eager to see more of her backstory shown more clearly to get a better idea of how this all connects. I didn’t expect to be so interested in her when we first met her, which is a pleasant surprise. Next week, the endgame begins.
