English Dub Review: Horimiya “You Wear More Than One Face”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

One day Hori sings an anime song as she and Miyamura walk and he comments on her singing. After getting home Hori sees that her mom’s home and after a conversation about Miyamura with her mom. Hori realizes that she doesn’t know his first name. This poses a problem for Hori, so she tries to find what his first name is. He brings up her weird behavior and she admits to not knowing his first name. Miyamura hands her a paper with his first name on it.

The student council enlists Hori’s help with some reports and she stays longer to get them done. Ayasaki, a member of the student council and the president’s girlfriend comes by to pick up the reports. She bumps into Miyamura later and accidentally leaves behind a budget report. It causes problems the next day as the student council asks for an apology from Hori over the missing budget report. Miyamura stops her while showing them the missing report and the student council apologizes. When Hori’s birthday rolls around, Miyamura gifts her a CD as they note that spring break is almost over.

Our Take:

This episode was hilarious and heartwarming from start to finish. Also, I just realized that Horimiya is a combination of Hori and Miyamura’s names and it is adorable. The pacing for the events in this episode was nice starting with Hori singing the anime song and saying that she doesn’t know what’s popular because she listens to what Sota puts on to her birthday gift from Miyamura.

I’ll start with Hori’s attempts at learning Miyamura’s first name from peeking when the boys are changing to being in the room when he introduces himself to her mom. They’re hilarious attempts for a simple thing. He does write down his first name for her after a good laugh with Sota on her explanation for why she’s been weird. There’s also Hori’s mom and their conversation about Miyamurs which was entertaining and shows how good their relationship is as mother and daughter.

Then there’s the student council: Sengoku, Sakura, and Ayasaki who appear to be part of the supporting cast. They push some of their work onto Hori cause the president, Sengoku has dirt on Hori since they are childhood friends and cause they have new members. Ayasaki’s little bump in with Miyamura worked well to give her a bit of characterization. Then there’s the next day where Miyamura stands up for Hori in that situation and that scene worked well. We got to see a different side of Miyamura when he headbutted Sengoku.

Lastly, there’s Hori’s birthday which gets brought up by Ishikawa to Miyamura as they playing ping pong. That was a nice touch and the other guys’ expression transitioned the longer the conversation went on was amusing. Hori’s birthday being during spring break marks the end of their time as second years. Sota’s question to Hori on if Miyamura will come over to their place during spring break brings up the question of how long his visits will continue. It’s great at showing how integral Miyamura has become in her daily life.

Overall it was an entertaining episode as we get introduced to more of the cast. I look forward to learning more about these two and their quirks.
