English Dub Review: Heroines Run the Show: The Unpopular Girl and the Secret Task “Producing Hiyori”

Overview

When President Tamura suggests that Hiyori dress up for an outing, Hiyori’s insecurities about her appearance begin to surface. She can’t help but worry that only “cute” girls can be heroines and that she can never be cute… but is that all in her mind?

Our Take

It’s always a good idea to see how your peers within the industry are doing. Much can be learned from simple observation. but out of all the previous episodes, it’s time to address the elephant in the room in regards to Hiyori as a character. Now that she’s the manager she needs to look the part in terms of formal wear and much-needed self-care so it’s time to address it. And who is better than our effeminate male leads?

On the subject, the second half was very fun with Aizo and Yuujirou helping Hiyori with dressing up. Throughout the show, her male peers have often teased Hiyori’s complex when it comes to her looks calling her bland or “Potato girl” So It makes sense that we’re now reaching the “Obligatory makeover” moment of this show that’s supposed to show that there’s beauty beneath the tomboy, but it was properly executed.

Overall, This was quite a chill episode without any big musical performances this time but still makes its point about friendship, connections, and determination to succeed. It welcomed some old friends into the show and also did well to improve upon Hiyori’s character while simultaneously improving the bond between her and her charges gradually. From Hiyori being unfazed about going in the men’s shower, to her sticking up for a girl getting harassed, to her finally starting to care about her appearance. We’re seeing actual character progression and I hope they keep going with this on a consistent level.
