English Dub Review: Golden Kamuy “Overwhelmed”

Who is where?

Overview:

As the Seventh Division’s assault continues, things only become more and more chaotic.

Our Take:

The breakout once again descends into chaos, and it seems like the only person who has their act together is Hijikata. This episode is truly aptly named, because so much is happening at once, and it’s hard to keep track of what’s going on, who is where, and whether the escape is truly proceeding- just like the characters.

Inkarmat and Tanigaki have their moment, where Inkarmat is crushed by a falling piece of wood, and Tanigaki stays behind. He knows that Inkarmat is the one who leaked the information to the Seventh Division, but he doesn’t really care. What he does care about is Inkarmat herself, and so he risks injury to get her out safely. Tanigaki’s truly a good guy.

Hijikata has figured out where Noppera-bo is on his own, but what tangles him up isn’t that he can’t find Noppera-bo, but because Warden Inudou has his own plans. Hijikata figures out the false empty basement with Toni’s help, as well as the fact that one door is a trap and the other is the truth. The thing is- warden Inudou comes out and confronts Hijikata, as well as keeps him in place. Hijikata cares about getting the gold from Noppera-bo, but he also wants his revenge from being imprisoned for the sake of Inudou’s grudge. This is a confrontation that’s been built up for a long time, and it’s soon to see whether a prison official can truly hold his own against one of the most famous samurai.

Shiraishi manages to get out and make contact with Asirpa, but the all important Sugimoto is left behind. Sugimoto eventually manages to break free, but he is still apart from Asirpa, and that’s not a good thing. Asirpa may be a fighter on her own, but she doesn’t have the honed distrust that Sugimoto has, and she is in the middle of a battlefield. She is also the key to the gold, as Noppera-bo won’t share the secret of the gold without her around, so she is essential. I doubt that she’ll be harmed, but there are a lot of people out there that can be willing to manipulate her for their own ends. She manages to get free of Hijikata to try to find Sugimoto, but will she be able to reach him in time…
