English Dub Review: Golden Kamuy “Call Out”

Everything goes wrong.

Overview:

So much happens in the finale of Golden Kamuy. What a finale that is.

Our Take:

It turns out that Noppera-bo didn’t kill the Ainu after all, but he was the one held responsible for it. What’s more likely is that the infighting really did happen, and Noppera-bo betrayed his comrades. That truly ends up being his downfall, as the one who puts an end to him isn’t Inudou or Hijikata, but Kiroranke.

Kiroranke doesn’t just try to kidnap Noppera-bo, but signals to have him killed. It turns out that there’s one other person on Kiroranke’s side- Ogata, and Ogata makes to kill both Noppera-bo and Sugimoto. Sugimoto is one person that Ogata has never gotten along with, and this is the perfect way to get rid of him. Not to mention, as was noted before, Sugimoto is very protective of Asirpa. Asirpa is the only one with the key to the gold, so Kiroranke needs to get to her. That’s impossible with Sugimoto in the way, who cares not for the gold, only for Asirpa. Both of them had to go for Kiroranke to succeed.

Neither Kiroranke or Ogata get away scot-free, for Inkarmat confronts Kiroranke. She saw what he was up to, and that he ordered to have Noppera-bo shot. When they get into a fight, Kiroranke stabs her by accident, but she takes hold of his weapon, which marks him as the culprit. To her, Kiroranke admits that Noppera-bo had to die because he didn’t tell the rebels he was working with the location of the gold, but changed his mind. As for Ogata, Sugimoto survives the shot to the head, and knows that the only one capable of pulling off a shot like that is Ogata. Their worst fears have been confirmed- that Sugimoto lives, and he is ready to kill them both.

Sugimoto and Tanigaki start to work for Tsurumi, with Tsukishima and Koito following them. Of all people, Sugimoto is most determined to get Asirpa back, and Asirpa feels that Sugimoto is out there, somewhere. She may not be absolutely sure, but she has a feeling.

None of the main characters die in the fight, but it’s still one that sets up a huge loss. The main party has been broken apart, most importantly, Sugimoto and Asirpa. It paves the way for a strong season 3, and I’m looking forward to it.
