English Dub Review: Girlfriend, Girlfriend “Obviously in Love”

Overview

Rika comes to hang out in Naoya and Saki’s classroom, causing sparks to fly between her and Saki…

Our Take

Mirika/Rika’s persistence knows no bounds as she tries to approach Naoya between classes. Of course, Saki tries her hardest to prevent Naoya from falling for Rika, but Naoya is not aware of Rika’s feelings for him. You’d think that if Saki had such a big issue with Naoya dating another girl, she’d make him reject Nagisa. They both are similar at their core, but she only seems to have a problem with Rika, it comes across as just annoyingly hypocritical considering the likability Rika herself seems to slowly give off.

Naoya shows how overly trusting and gullible he is, even if he’s too trusting or dedicated to a fault. At the very least Nagisa was even pretty funny in this episode as well. And I’m surprised an Anime can talk about subtle sex/hentai subgenre/categories so casually such as “NTR” of all things which is in a nutshell, short for “Neotare” that mostly involves being turned on by cheating or being “cucked” which is surprisingly becoming normalized in pop culture thanks to shows like Rick & Morty.

Overall, this anime has reached its limits on how absurd the characters can act in school. It continues its cringy humor with how stupid it is. But at the very least, I’m never bored while watching it. Rika is quite clearly a persistent contender now. Speaking of which, the white-haired girl named “Shino” is getting more screen time than usual and it’s clear from the promotional material along with the intro/outro that she will be properly introduced soon…
