English Dub Review: Fruits Basket “You Will, I’m Sure”

Overview

Tohru along and her classmates and the two Sohma Brothers take a class trip to Kyoto. After visiting a bamboo forest, they stopped to rest when the unthinkable has happened… A random classmate just so happens to call Kyo Sohma is called aside to confess to him. But the question is, will Tohru’s circle of friends respect his privacy?

Our Take

Tohru finally starts to notice herself a bit more as well as her true feelings more towards Kyo. Also, Yuki shows us that there might be some deeper story between Kyo and Tohru’s mother. It was nice that the episode itself gave us some proper breathing room after the last few being emotionally heavy. Some mildly somber times while on this school trip but for the most part, it’s just the characters having a nice time away from their angsty teenager bullshit, and structured into two separate storylines with Tohru & Kyo being the focus in the first half. Her moments with Kyo are quite fun and you feel genuine chemistry between the leads. Even after she’s learned that he’s going to be confined soon there is an added layer of tragedy yet the two of them together feel like a glimmer of hope. However, there is a moment with them going off together after Tohru got worried from Kyo saying it’s none of her business. The distance he’s trying to create hurts her but we can also see how much Kyo cares about Tohru.

Yuki got the second half of this episode, mostly with Kakeru following. That dude is something! So incessant about Yuki being friends with him. Yuki kinda had to bruise his ego when it came to Kakeru joking about liking Tohru on a romantic level. There’s an implied deep connection between him and Tohru, that was kinda teased this episode, which remains to be seen what direction this could possibly take. But for now, Kakeru is asking some interesting questions to Yuki. Who in turn after learning Kakeru has a girlfriend respects him for being so confident in his feelings, just like he did with Rin a few episodes back. Also, Yuki vowing to make memories he can look back on fondly sounds like a great ambition worth pursuing.

This episode had a really fun and relaxing atmosphere and felt refreshing to see the usual antics from Tohru and the others during their trip to Kyoto which makes you almost forget the supernatural aspects of this show when “slice of life” stuff like this is occasionally is thrown in. The background art, in particular, was excellent, and I give massive points to the animation team for capturing the feel of and look of the Kyoto scenery with their attention to detail.
